That Muffin Top is Affecting Your Brain!

Research now indicates that middle-aged individuals with high belly fat (the muffin top look) are 3.6 times more likely to experience Dementia and other cognitive disorders at their age.  It turns out that the protein that manages learning and memory in the brain happens to be the same one needed for metabolizing fat in the liver.  The Rush College Medical Center researchers found that the amount of protein (called PPARalpha) available for processing memory was directly related to higher stomach fat.  The analysts discovered that the hippocampus (often called ”the brains memory center”) and the liver both require this protein. While the hippocampus utilizes PPARalpha to process memory, the liver requires this protein to burn belly fat and that’s why having a fat belly can be a problem. 

Our liver works hard to process fat, utilizing up PPARalpha in the process. The research found that muffin top individuals needed more PPARalpha protein than was available around the liver. The researchers discovered that to complete the process, the liver looks for other sources in the body, which points directly to the brain and the hippocampus.
