Healthy Sperm, Healthy Baby

It’s not just women that need to prepare their bodies for a healthy pregnancy. It takes two to make a healthy baby and sperm health plays a vital role in a man’s fertility.

One in six couples will struggle with infertility; about a third of the time, the issue is attributed to the male partner. And one of the biggest causes of male infertility is poor baby-making material. In other words, unhealthy sperm. Sperm health can be affected by a host of issues, including lifestyle habits such as stress, being overweight, and heavy drinking.

Diet can also play a critical role; one study at McGill University found that sperm quality is affected by the amount of folate in dad-to-be’s diet. Folate deficiency was revealed to lead to increased in certain conditions such as diabetes and autism.

The good news is that the effect of most bad habits on sperm is short-lived. With sperm production taking around three months, some quick and easy lifestyle changes can increase a guy’s chance of his boys making it across the finish line.

Avoiding the hot tub and tighty-whities isn’t just a myth when it comes to boosting sperm health. Both are found to reduce overall production. Healthy eating. Including a daily dose of folate found in foods like dark leafy greens (think spinach and yup, kale too), berries and nuts and seeds is also known to improve sperm quality. Prenatal vitamins and cutting down on caffeine also help optimize sperm quality.
